Why we make these
He wrote the song that plays at every Mexican mother's funeral, and hundreds more besides.
Juan Gabriel · El Divo de Juárez
Raised in an orphanage in Ciudad Juárez, self-taught on piano, Juan Gabriel became one of the most prolific songwriters Latin music has ever had — writing not just his own catalog but hits for dozens of other artists, all while pushing back on what a Mexican pop star was allowed to look like.
'Amor Eterno,' written for his mother, is still the song that plays at the hardest goodbyes. He passed in 2016; the whole country stopped.
