Why we make these
The girl from Corpus Christi who made being Mexican-American feel like the coolest thing in the world.
Selena · Tejano Queen
Selena Quintanilla broke into a Tejano scene that wasn't built for a young woman, and she owned every stage anyway — bedazzled bustiers, cumbias, a crossover album on the way. She was murdered in 1995 at 23, and the loss still lands the same way decades later.
For a lot of families, she was the first time being bilingual and in-between two cultures felt like a superpower instead of a problem.
